John F. Canfield, President and Owner

John has worked for over 30 years in the energy field as an engineer and consultant. John has performed detailed energy audits of over 100 million square feet including military bases, federal and state facilities, city and county facilities, university campuses, industrial plants/sites, hospitals, K-12 school districts, and commercial offices. John has been an guaranteed energy savings performance contracting program consultant under contract to the Colorado Energy Office since 2000 and has also provided similar consulting services to the States of Arkansas, Missouri, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. John brings a unique perspective in working with clients with his background as an engineer, high school teacher, presenter, co-founder and Vice President of a national energy service company, energy manager for the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Facilities Management Department, solar system designer and installer, and current founder and owner of Trident Energy Services. 

John has a M.S. from the University of Colorado in building energy engineering. John was named 2006 Colorado Energy Champion and appointed to Boulder County Consortium of Cities Task Force in 2006.


Andrea Massey, Technical Assistant

Andrea has worked for over 10 years in the energy field as a project director and consultant. Andrea has helped develop guaranteed energy savings performance contracts and energy efficiency projects for a multitude of clients, both in the public and private sector. She brings experience in evaluating the financial benefits of energy efficiency measures and renewable energy projects, developing strategic plans for reducing energy and greenhouse gas emissions, and assisting clients in obtaining additional funding sources for their projects. Andrea assists with the management and coordination of guaranteed energy savings performance contracting projects for local and state governments, K-12 schools, and institutions of higher education.

Prior to joining Trident Energy Services, Andrea worked as a project director for an ESCO where she helped develop guaranteed energy savings performance contracts for state and local government, K-12 schools, and institutions of higher education.  Andrea completed her B.A. in psychology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Eric Johanson, P.E., C.E.M., LEED A.P. - Senior Engineer

Eric has worked for over 25 years in the energy field as a consultant and engineer. For 20 years he designed energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems and low water-use plumbing for new and existing buildings. He provided energy and economic analysis as well as design and construction management for the projects. Specialties include cost estimating, HVAC controls and renewable energy use, including solar and geothermal heat pumps. His clients include higher education, K-12 schools, and the National Park Service. Some of his projects have required LEED certification. Eric performed energy audits for 8 buildings at the University of Northern Colorado, and he provided an energy audit for a building for the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) / Xcel.  He was the energy engineer on a performance contract to replace a Chiller at Regis University. He has also reviewed energy audits by ESCOs for Colorado municipalities for GEO, and he analyzed energy use for Colorado K12 schools.

Eric co-authored “The Sustainable Design Resource Guide”, published by AIA Denver, is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers. Eric has a B.S. from Northwestern University in chemical engineering. He is a licensed professional engineer (PE), a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), and a LEED accredited professional.

Emily Artale, P.E., C.E.M., LEED A.P. - Energy Engineer 

Emily is co-owner and principal engineer of Lotus Engineering and Sustainability, LLC. Emily has worked for over 10 years in the energy and sustainability fields as an engineer and consultant. She has worked with Trident for 6 years as an GESPC consultant. During this time she has provided guidance to dozens of public agencies on the technical, contractual and programmatic details of guaranteed energy savings performance contracting. She brings experience in outreach and communication, technical evaluation,  strategic plan development for reducing energy and greenhouse gas emissions, and analyzing and calculating various sustainability metrics.

Prior to joining Trident Energy Services, Emily co-authored a book with Hunter Lovins, sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, on the future of industry in Asia and in the World. Emily completed her B.S. and M.S. in environmental engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Hillary Dobos, MBA, LEED GA - Consultant

Hillary is co-owner and principal of Lotus Engineering and Sustainability, LLC. Hillary brings both expertise and creative thinking to working with clients which she draws from her experience as a consultant advising public and private clients throughout the United States, as well as the one tasked with embedding sustainability throughout a 25,000+ person organization.  While at the Governors Energy Office, Hillary managed the Energy Performance Contracting, Greening Government, and Colorado Carbon Fund Programs. Hillary has served on various local and national boards focused on conservation, Guaranteed Energy Savings Performance Contracting, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. 

Hillary earned her B.A. in Art History and Economics from Bowdoin College in Maine and her MBA from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Hillary is a LEED Green Associate and has a Certificate in Environmental Law and Regulation from the University of Washington.
